Team Tuesday - with Kassi Hulet

Some gardens grow in the backyard…and some grow beautifully on paper!

For today’s Team Tuesday, Design Team member Kassi Hulet is sharing a gorgeous watercolor floral inspired by memories of time spent in the garden with her mom and grandmother. While Kassi may claim she didn’t inherit their green thumbs, we think she’s found an equally beautiful way to keep those garden memories blooming! With her MISTI Lite, Petunia Platform, and Power Mag helping simplify the stamping and painting process, Kassi lets her watercolors take center stage in this warm, sun-kissed floral design. Hello Friends!

Both my mom and my grandmother were great gardeners. I spent many afternoons helping each of them in their different gardens. Those memories are so precious to me! Unfortunately, I did not inherit the green thumb… I try, but the deer and slugs constantly eat everything I plant and leave only weeds and wild blackberries to grow uncontrollably…  I’m pretty sure anyone who comes to visit my house wonders why the yard looks like it’s been neglected for years.

Since I can’t successfully grow a beautiful garden, I paint them…

This particular floral stamp from Brass and Bliss (Hellebore Floral) is just small enough it fits on the MISTI Lite, so I started by taping down my watercolor paper to the Platform, then using Inkon3 Fadeout ink to stamp my flowers. I’m finding that I really like being able to just tape my paper down and leave it while I stamp and paint. The MISTI Lite simplifies my process more than I realized it would!

My favorite part is always the painting, but I find that yellows can be a bit tricky. Adding in the necessary shadows can sometimes leave your yellows feeling a bit dull or dirty, so I used a peach color to ensure I got the contrast but didn’t lose the warmth or vibrance. These colors are a mix of Deep Deep Light, and Masha’s watercolors.

After painting, I brought back in my MISTI Lite to add in the sentiment- this one is from Gina K. Designs Blissful Blossoms.

I finished my card by die cutting my painted panel using Brass and Bliss Nested Frame 1, then matting that with some coral cardstock that was embossed using Gina K. Designs Petite Floral embossing folder. This was then glued to the front of an A2 card.

We may not all have a green thumb, but thankfully there’s always room to grow a beautiful garden in the craft room! 

We love how Kassi uses her Petunia Platform and Power Mag to create a secure workspace for her watercolor paper, allowing her to stamp, paint, and work on her image without constantly repositioning her project. Then, when it’s time for the finishing touches, the MISTI Lite comes right back into the process for perfectly placed stamping. It’s a wonderful example of how the right tools can simplify your workflow and leave you more time to enjoy the part you love most.
