I don’t know about you, but I seem to change what colors I’m drawn to as the seasons change… I am fully embracing the brighter “cotton candy” type colors right now! Despite my large collection of dark, muted colors, I have been gravitating to my much smaller collection of bright pastels…
After taping my Arches Cold Press watercolor paper to the Platform, I used Midnight Blossom (Art by Waiyi) and Ocean Blue (Holbein) to create a light and loose watercolor background- focusing the most color in the bottom left corner and leaving the upper right corner white.
After the background was dry, I used the MISTI Lite to stamp the cone flower, stem, and leaves from Colossal Coneflower (Gina K. Designs) using Fadeout ink (Inkon3). I love when I can leave my paper taped to the Platform and just pop the MISTI Lite over top to stamp my image! Keeping the paper taped down to the board from start to finish means it’s less likely to be warped in the end.
I like to use the same colors I used in the background for my flower. The only new color I added was Magic Wizard (Rockwell) as I needed a yellow for the center of the flower, and to mix with the blue to create green.
I only used 3 colors for this painting- a purple, a yellow, and a blue. While this isn’t the traditional primary color palette, it serves the same purpose (using the purple as a red). By mixing all the colors from this trio, it helps harmonize all the colors, so they all feel like they belong together.
I like to glaze in a bit of unexpected color to my petals. Though the main color in my petals is the purple, I did glaze in pops of the blue. It gives it just a little more visual interest, and since it’s the same blue, I have used everywhere else in the painting, it doesn’t compete or look out of place.
After the flower was dry, I brought the MISTI Lite back in to stamp my sentiment. Lining up the lines on the Platform with the lines etched into the MISTI Lite make getting my sentiment straight so much easier!
I love how this card turned out! The simple design meant it didn’t take me too long to create, and the colors just make my heart happy!
Happy painting!
